HARTFORD — At their first assembly after the annual town meeting, selectmen and residents considered the consequences of withdrawing from Regional School Unit 10 on Thursday.

The board reviewed a report from RSU 10 representative Shawn White. He said that going back to the old district would cost the town a lot more than shouldering the $1.2 million for RSU 10.

White recommended that they not follow Buckfield’s lead. Classes would be lost or would cost extra to keep. The town would have to foot the bill for Oxford Technical Center, and there would be issues with providing buses, a bus garage, a superintendent and a central office, as well as incurring building expenses.

White urged the town to be cautious, but he admitted that if the NewPage mill shuts down, RSU 10 costs could skyrocket.

Considerable time was spent discussing parking problems at the beach. Those who do not have beach permits are subject to fines. Selectman Jack Plumley suggested that the problem is that nonresidents do not respect the office of the constable.

Plumley said that the beach needs a proper parking lot and that he would clear the trees to create it. Road Commissioner Jeremy Johnson was asked to calculate the cost of building the lot, and Constable Chuck Merritt said some cars have to be towed to get the attention of violators. He said the problem is finding a towing company that will do the work.
