It has been a privilege to represent Ward 5 on the Lewiston School Committee. I am grateful for the support of my family during my years on the board. I know that I have made my parents, Canadian immigrants, very proud to say that their daughter serves her community in such a manner.

One of my least favorite duties as a member of the School Committee is having to take part in disciplinary/re-entry hearings of students. It absolutely amazes me how our exemplary students are able to learn without being distracted by the students who take no thought to the privilege of receiving an education. Often times, not always, I can see that the apple did not fall far from the tree when face-to-face with the parents of those students.

Although I am under oath not to discuss what is said during executive sessions, I cannot help but express my disgust in bad judgment. Apparently, racism between different ethnic groups is acceptable behavior as long as it keeps peace and order at a meeting, and allows a student to have the opportunity at again receiving an education. When I challenged that issue, the gavel came down and I was made to be silent.

I do have respect for the position of committee chairman, but I no longer have respect for the chairman, Jim Handy.
