STONINGTON — The life and work of Pulitzer Prize-winning, Camden, Maine poet Edna St. Vincent Millay is being celebrated and explored by Opera House Arts at the Stonington Opera House with an original production, “The Millay Sisters, A Cabaret” July 5-7 and July 12-14 in a live cabaret setting including open bar at the Burnt Cove Church.
“Millay was a ground breaking writer, both for Maine and as a woman,” said Judith Jerome, OHA’s artistic director. “She stands alongside a very small handful of Maine poets, predominantly Edwin Arlington Robinson and Robert Tristram Coffey, in her accomplishments, but has not always received the attention she deserves.”
“The Millay Sisters, A Cabaret” focuses on Millay’s — who preferred to be called Vincent — unusual upbringing by a divorced, single mother left alone with her two sisters Norma and Kathleen at the turn of the 20th century. The sisters, encouraged by their mother but left often to their own devices, sang songs from the American Songbook produced during the Jazz Age. The production is based around live renditions of these classic tunes as they are used to tell the story of Millay’s writing and life.
