TURNER — The town will celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks, a salute to veterans, a parade and music.

Organizer Ralph Caldwell said the parade will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday.

“Come be a part of our community celebration,” he said. “A little red wagon with a pup in it, kids on bikes, antique cars, antique equipment, horses, floats, whatever; if you are proud of it, it belongs in the parade.”

The parade will honor veterans, he said. “We can accommodate them whether they are in wheelchairs, want to ride on the veterans’ float or march.”

Participants will line up at the Turner Primary School on Cobb Road at 9:30 a.m. The parade will go from Schrep’s Corner Store, through the town center to Leavitt Area High School.

There will be activities all day on the green by the Leavitt Institute building, including speeches, kids’ games, the Strawberry Shortcake Band and food.

Caldwell encourages visitors to tour the Trophy Room at the Dort S. Bigg Jr. house near the town green. Bigg, who died Aug. 17, 2012, at the age of 82, enjoyed hunting and made many trips to Africa. He amassed a world-renowned collection of mounted animals, including a life-size, 5½-ton African elephant, lions, leopards and a world-record polar bear, according to his obituary.

The Independence Day celebration will end with a fireworks display at the Caldwell fields on North Parish Road near the intersection at Schrep’s store. The display will start at about 9 p.m. Rain date is July 5.
