A partial lifting of the water ban in Lewiston was announced last night by Public Works Department Director George J. Maher. Starting today, the use of outdoor hoses will be allowed between 6 and 8 p.m. He emphasized that the hoses can be used “for gardens and lawns only.” Last week, with the city in the grip of a scorching heat wave, water consumption exceeded the amount that could be pumped into the system and the ban was put on all outside hoses and sprinklers. General consumption was very good. PWD patrols had to threaten to shut off home water supplies in a few instances to get a few to cooperate.

Tens of thousands of people will be pouring into the town of Oxford again this weekend for two concerts by the Grateful Dead at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday and Sunday nights, adding to traffic problems as more thousands head into Maine for the holiday weekend. “The biggest problem last week was that we couldn’t get the traffic into the Speedway fast enough,” said Capt. Raymond Lafrance, Androscoggin County’s Director of Public Safety. “That backed it up all the way to New Gloucester.”
