PROSPECT — Police said that a fight over a woman that began in fisticuffs early Saturday morning ended with a gunshot, bloodshed and a trip to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for a wounded man.

No charges have been filed yet and police are not releasing the names of those involved, Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said Monday morning. But Trafton did say that before the assault happened, a Prospect woman who lives on Spout Hill Road and her boyfriend of six months had decided to separate for the night on Friday. The boyfriend — who lives in Auburn — said he would go to his uncle’s house, Trafton said, adding that he was unsure if the couple were breaking up.

Later on that night, the woman invited another man to her home, telling police later that she had asked him to come by because she needed cigarettes and another prepaid cell phone. That man is from Brewer, police said.

At some point, her boyfriend drove by and saw another vehicle parked in the driveway, Trafton said.

“He pulls in, barges into the house and a physical struggle ensues,” Trafton said.

At one point, the boyfriend apparently was on top of the Brewer man, pounding his head into the floor, according to police reports.

“The other guy felt like his life was in danger, and thought maybe he’d lost consciousness at one point,” Trafton said.

Trafton said the Brewer man pulled a small, loaded handgun from his pocket and shot the boyfriend in the abdomen.

The woman called 911 to report the shooting and said that she needed an ambulance to come quickly. Members of the Stockton Springs Ambulance Service, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police Criminal Investigation Division all responded to the home.

Trafton said the state police division was notified in case the wounded man died.

The injured man is receiving treatment at the Bangor hospital and was able to talk to Det. Gerry Lincoln of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend, Trafton said. On Monday, police did not have a current update on the injured man’s condition.

All three of the people involved in the incident told consistent stories about the events to the police, Trafton said.

The investigation is ongoing.
