In other police news, a Rumford officer was assaulted and injured on July 4 while responding to a fireworks complaint on Erchles Street, Sgt. Douglas Maifeld said Friday afternoon.

Maifeld said Cpl. Lawrence Winson and officer Josh Holland responded to a call about fireworks coming from the area prior to 10:30 p.m., and met Charles L. Gannon, 42, of Rumford.

He said Gannon was charged with disorderly conduct and resisted arrest, resulting in Winson suffering a hip injury. Winson went to Rumford Hospital where he was diagnosed with a strained hip muscle, Maifeld said.

Gannon was charged with felony assault on a police officer and refusal to submit to arrest, in addition to disorderly conduct. He was released on $1,000 cash bail and will be arraigned on Aug. 16 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.

At 5:50 p.m. on July 2, police were called to NewPage Corp.’s lower gate access for a two-vehicle accident. Maifeld said Roger P. Cote, 60, of Buckfield backed into another vehicle twice, despite the other driver honking her horn to alert him. Maifeld said damage was minor.

Maifeld said that after Cote parked his vehicle he entered the mill for work. Police asked him to come out and arrested him on a charge of operating under the influence, Maifeld said.

Cote was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris and will be arraigned Sept. 3 in 11th District Court.
