AUBURN — Central Maine Community College will offer a course in ergonomics this fall in partnership with the MEMIC Center for Workplace Safety.

The course will be delivered as a hybrid — four meetings on campus with the majority of coursework done online.

Occupational ergonomics is the scientific basis for design of work environments to optimize physical and mental interaction of workers with their machines, tools and work methods. This survey course will examine issues most often associated with lower back and upper body injuries which account for one third of lost time, work-related injuries in Maine.

Topics will include work physiology, anthropometry, biomechanics, work scheduling, mental workload, and the psychosocial work environment. Basic approaches to workplace design for the control of ergonomic stresses are incorporated into each unit.

Ergonomics will meet from 6 to 8:55 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 3, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 10. The course is open to anyone who needs to manage a health and safety program.

Registration for the three-credit course is open and ongoing, however space is limited. The cost is $338.40 and includes tuition, fees and all materials except the textbook.
