AUBURN — David Lee Spencer, 83, of Lewiston, died July 15 at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice in Auburn.

David was born in Auburn on March 27, 1930, son of the late Bernard S. Spencer and Ida M. (Buzzell) Spencer. He was a member of the Ashlar Masonic Lodge and Kora Shrine Chanters.

David grew up in Lewiston until the age of 12, and then moved to South Monmouth to live with his foster parents, Ralph and Irene Southard.

He finished grammar school in a one-room schoolhouse, and was the last student to graduate from that school before its demolition. David graduated from Monmouth Academy with honors in 1949. He served in the Air Force for the next four years, being honorably discharged in 1953.

After returning from the service, he became an announcer for the radio station WRDO in Augusta, where he met and married the love of his life, Marietta E. Nash.

In October 1955, he was employed by New England Telephone and Telegraph. He spent the next 36 years working in the equipment department, retiring in 1991.

David is survived by his wife, Marietta Spencer; two sons, David R. Spencer and Steven L. Spencer; and many in-laws.
