LIVERMORE — More complaints of fireworks being shot from town property have come in, town administrative assistant Kurt Schaub said Wednesday.
There is evidence that fireworks have been shot from the public beach at Brettuns Pond and the town’s recreation field, he said.
Unexploded fireworks have been left behind at both sites.
“We have contacted the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department, and they will be keeping an eye on both sites,” Schaub said.
Town officials became aware of the problem on July 2.
State law allows a person to use consumer fireworks only on that person’s property or on the property of a person who has consented to the use of fireworks on that property.
A civil violation carries a fine of not less than $50 and not more than $500, plus court costs, according to the Maine Office of the State Fire Marshal’s website.
When the state legalized using certain consumer fireworks on Jan. 1, 2012, the town began dealing with unexploded fireworks being brought in to the town’s Transfer Station.
Since then, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Office of State Fire Marshal developed a disposal protocol for unexploded fireworks, Schaub said.
“Specifically, residents are being advised to soak unexploded fireworks overnight in a bucket of water, then double-wrap them in plastic bags so they don’t dry out,” he said. “They can then be safely disposed of in our Transfer Station compactor, along with regular household trash.”
