LEWISTON — Central Maine Credit Union recently won two first-place and one second-place award for programs offered to the public.

Their Books for Kids Program won the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award, created to encourage and honor credit union involvement in community projects and activities.

This is the credit union’s signature community project in support the elementary schools of Androscoggin County. Each school is able to use the funds to buy books and supplies for their library. The program also includes a library for Monty Moose members to borrow. A summer reading grant is also offered annually for which all school and public libraries may apply. The credit union also draws a Monty Moose member each month to receive a book.

Central Maine Credit Union’s Teen Program won first place in the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award, which recognizes leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of youth financial literacy. It considers all activities supporting the personal finance education of young members. The credit union offered four free financial sessions for teens throughout the summer. The credit union also offers newsletters and a dedicated website for its teenage members.

The Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Award recognizes credit unions that do an extraordinary job incorporating credit union philosophy into daily operations. Central Maine Credit Union won second place for its Monty Moose Youth Savers Program. The purpose of the program is to introduce children up to 12 years old to the credit union and to provide educational and fun ways to learn good savings habits at an early age.

This is the 11th consecutive year Central Maine Credit Union has won the Dora Maxwell and Louise Herring awards. All first-place awards qualify for the national competition.

Central Maine Federal Credit Union has offices at 1000 Lisbon St., Lewiston, and 836 Center St., Auburn.
