GRAY — With more humid weather expected to bake the state Friday, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory.
Hot conditions will dominate northern New England throughout the day, with temperatures in some areas expected to reach the upper 90s with heat index values topping 100.
The heat advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Friday for Oxford, York, Cumberland, Androscoggin and Kennebec counties.
The NWS is advising people to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Relatives and neighbors, particularly those who are elderly, should be checked on frequently as well.
Those who are working outside should drink plenty of water and wear light and loose-fitting clothing.
In addition to the heat warnings, strong thunderstorms are expected to move through northern Penobscot, Piscataquis and Aroostook counties Friday morning.
Gusty winds, rainfall in excess of an inch an hour and excessive cloud-to-ground lightning are expected.
