RUMFORD — For the second straight night, police, fire and power crews were scrambling after heavy winds and lightning strikes caused havoc after dark.

At about 9:30 p.m., residents across Oxford County reported a variety of problems, including power lines down, trees across roads and in some places, flames.

In Woodstock, reports came in that a house on Gore Road was fully engulfed. Fire crews went out and found wires down, spitting sparks and catching debris on fire. There was no fire, crews reported.

Power was out across a wide area, including most of Dixfield. Some residents there said they still had power, but their lights were flickering. By 9:45 p.m., Central Maine Power was reporting 4,000 people without power in Oxford County.

Roads were closed in several towns, including Bethel, Dixfield and Rumford, due to trees or wires down across roadways.

Androscoggin County, meanwhile, was largely untouched. No power outages were reported and the skies were clear in Lewiston-Auburn.
