100 years ago, 1913
A dog ran across the diamond, a small boy threw a rock at the dog, the rock went through a cellar window and a family feud resulted. That is what happened on the Danville Road on Monday morning when several small boys assayed to play a game of scrub on the Rowes Corner Road. When the dog interfered by barking and chasing the ball, the pitcher became angry and threw a stone at it. The twirler in his madness had lost his control, The rock went wild and disappeared with a smash of glass. Then out came the proprietor of the domicile, and the pitcher‘s father also appeared. In less time than it took for the baseball nines to dissemble, wives, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles appeared. Meanwhile, the cause of the trouble, Towser, was making for the back woods turning up the road to New Auburn.

50 years ago, 1963
All available space on the main floor of the Central Maine Youth Center on Birch Street in Lewiston has been filled for the third annual Maine Products Show scheduled for August 15 through 17. Some 106 booths have been filled on the 17,000-square-foot arena, which is billed as the largest portable floor in the world. There is still room for a few displays in the lobby area and for mobile and larger exhibits in the parking lot. This year’s show is expected to attract some 60,000 spectators to the million-dollar Center during the three-day period.

Ticket sales for the fourth annual Festival by the Lake have been brisk and, if the weather remains cooperative, an audience of more than 4,000 people is expected on the shore of Lake Auburn on Saturday, organizers said. The event features the Portland Symphony Orchestra and the Auburn Community Band. Fireworks launched from rafts on the lake will close out the evening.
