100 years ago, 1913
Again, Tuesday night in enormous numbers did the brown tail moths fly. Nothing like it ever was seen before. Instead of lessening as predicted they seemed to increase in number. The air around the arc-lights in Auburn was like a snow storm in winter. What will be the outcome? It is certain that if this keeps on and the long-awaited onslaught of the “parasite” is delayed the flight of the moths in 1914 will be a month of evenings and the work of the caterpillar will be devastation to our orchards and shade trees. The traps in Auburn Wednesday were literally running over. It is estimated that the catch was over 1,000,000 moths. Over 75 percent of the moths were females. Those who are interested in watching the flight may see it tonight. If there is no shower this afternoon and the night is warm, the flight will be large.

(Photo Caption) AUBURN HOOTENANNY — Larry Shapiro on the bongos and Steve Blatt with the guitar give several members of the Auburn playground program a taste of a folk-singing hootenanny, held Thursday evening at the Fairview School. The song-fest was under the direction of Tom Upham, supervisor at the Fairview playground. In addition to the solo performances by the Auburn musicians, the youngsters joined in on several well-known numbers.

A piece of Mechanic Falls history will go up in smoke shortly as the Town Council has ordered the Fire Department to use the old grandstand for a training fire. The grandstand is the massive structure on the baseball field behind the municipal building, A bid of $34,000 from Three Rivers Company was quoted by Town Manager Harvard Urquhart for restoration of the structure. The council deemed it too expensive and ordered that it be burned.
