FARMINGTON — RSU 9 school directors voted Tuesday to approve Superintendent Tom Ward’s nomination of Keith Martin as part-time assistant principal at the Mallett School in Farmington.

Martin of Wilton is a third-grade teacher at the school. He has been in that position since August 2001.

He has a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a master of science degree in education. He became assistant principal certified in June.

There were five candidates who applied for the position. Three people were interviewed based on requests for transfer, according to information provided.

The school board added the part-time principal position to the $29.7 million budget on April 30 due to the number of students attending the pre-kindergarten through third-grade school.

Mallett School had 436 students in May and it was projected the number would climb to about 450 in the coming school year.

The state’s recommended funding model is 305 students per administrator up to grade eight.

The board budgeted $46,859 for the position, which breaks down to $32,000 for wages and $14,859 for benefits.

Martin will continue to teach third grade part-time.

Interviews for principal of Academy Hill and Cushing schools in Wilton will be conducted Wednesday morning.

Former Wilton schools Principal Darlene Paine is the new Cape Cod Hill School principal in New Sharon. She replaces Cheryl Pike, who retired.

In other personnel matters, the board approved a job-share agreement between music teacher Nancy Beacham and her brother-in-law, Graybert Beacham. Nancy Beacham will teach four days a week while Graybert Beacham will teach one day a week.

Nancy Beacham teaches grade-three violin and grades four to six orchestra and small group lessons. She proposes to teach Tuesday to Friday, with Graybert teaching Mondays.

“This would not change the design of our string program or scheduling,” Nancy Beacham wrote in her proposal to Ward and the Board of Directors.

Graybert Beacham of Farmington is a violinist/violist, teacher and conductor, according to his resume. He currently is a stringed instrument specialist for grades three and four as well as exploratory violin and string class instructor for grades five through eight at SAD 58 school district in northern Franklin County.

He is also the conductor of SAD 58’s districtwide grade five through eight string orchestra.

He has an extensive background in music, including orchestras, and as a performer in the Nordica Trio as a violinist and violist.

The board also voted to approve Chris Maxham of Chesterville for a teaching position in the forestry and wood harvesting program at the Foster Career and Technical Education Center at Mt. Blue Campus in Farmington.

Nine candidates applied for the position, eight were interviewed. Dean Merrill , former teacher of the program, retired this year.

Maxham has 16 years of experience in conventional and mechanical logging, according to his resume. He is a Mt. Blue High School graduate and was a student in the forestry program at Foster.

He has worked as a professional logger for L & A Ridley Logging of Jay since November 1996.

Directors also voted to approve the nomination of Amy-Jo Arsenault of Turner to fill a position as a licensed social worker in the special education program.

Two candidates applied for the position.

Arsenault worked in several programs that deal with mental health and/or behavioral needs, according to her resume.

Her most recent position was at Connections for Kids as a day treatment social worker this year.
