SOUTH PORTLAND — GFWC Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs Art Department contest winners were announced at the annual convention, by art department Chairman Barbara Hathaway, “Painter of Sunsets” from Wilton.

The event was a two-day art and photo exhibit and contests.

Best Community Service Narrative was won by GFWC/Semper Fidelis Club of Skowhegan. Some of the highlights of their narrative included: more than 150 children participated in a coloring contest and made Christmas cards during Skowhegan Recreation Department Winter Carnival; $50 was donated to the Skowhegan Free Public Library for craft supplies; refreshments were made for sale to support the library; fleece blankets were made for an auction where more than 100 people attended; $25 went to a piano fund for an assisted living facility; one member won third-place in the landscape category at GFWC Convention; $25 was donated for the high school district art show.

High School Art Contest winners were: First place, Tyler Eldridge, grade 11, Gorham High School, sponsored by Gorham Women’s Club; second place, Vera Chin, grade 10, Machias; third place, Samantha Russell, grade 11; honorable mentions were Samantha Howel, grade 12, Nokomis Regional High, sponsored by the Newport Women’s Club, and Maureen Trudy, grade 12, Washington Academy, sponsored by GFWC Maine Machias.

Creative Writing entries were judged by Patricia Schanck of Farmington. The winning short story was titled, “Sedony’s Story,” by Jean Lawrence of Waldoboro Women’s Club. Poetry winning entry was “My Little Grandmother,” by Mary Cayford of Cornville.

Membership Photography Contest winners in The World In Pictures category: Feature was won by Tina Anzelc, GFWC Maine Semper Fidelis Club, Skowhegan. Natural History winner was Christine Fournier, GFWC Maine Livermore Falls Women’s Club. Scenic was won by Joyce Noonan, GFWC Maine Skowhegan Woman’s Club.

Volunteers In Action was won by Nancy Ames, GFWC Maine Seper Fidelis Club. Judges for the Photo and High school Student Art show were children’s book author/illustrator Catherine Falwall and artists Mary Brooking, Jerermy Green and Patty Sundic.

Hathaway read a letter from prominent artist Dahlov Ipcar, from Georgetown. Ipcar, an artist illustrator, is the most recent recipient of the Farnsworth Art Museums’ Maine in America Award, honoring outstanding contributions to Maine’s role in American Art. A copy of her letter was sent to the MFWC district presidents to share with their groups and at their high school art shows and was read at the convention. Ipcar’s letter encouraged the student artist to do art that they liked and wanted to do.

Hathaway also reported that the total Arts Community Service projects were 46, with a total of 765 volunteer hours, total dollars donated $1251 and total in-kind donations $334.

Art Partnership Chairman Wilma “Billie” Sherman of Canaan reported on an art project called Faces Make Places: Celebrating Workers in Our Communities.

The GFWC Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs’ theme, Volunteer Stewards, Joyfully Serving and Giving to Others, chosen by President Anne Cress, reflects the group dedication to volunteering.
