NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library will host a performance of the Maine-based Middle Eastern ensemble Okbari at the library at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22,  as the finale of the library’s summer long Muslim Journeys program series.

Okbari, consisting of Amos Libby and Eric LaPerna, will give a brief history of Middle Eastern music and instruments and play traditional Middle Eastern music.

Libby and LaPerna are co-directors of the Bowdoin College Middle Eastern Ensemble, adjunct professors at Bowdoin College, and applied music faculty at Bates College. Both have also spent years mastering Middle Eastern music techniques in percussion drumming.

Free tickets are available at the library’s information desk beginning on Thursday, Aug. 1. Tickets will be required to attend the event and will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis.

Partnering with Norway Memorial Library in these programs are Oxford Hills & Buckfield Adult Education and the Western Maine University College Center. Funding for all programs is provided by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council with matching funds from the Friends of Norway Memorial Library.

All programs are free and open to the public. To register for programs and for more information, call the library at 743-5309 ext. 1 or visit the library’s website at www.norway.me.us.
