FARMINGTON — Selectmen approved use of funds to replace a master valve in the police building sprinkler system Tuesday.

Police Chief Jack Peck sought approval to use funding from the police building reserve account — $3,100 for the valve and $500 for installation, as quoted by Eastern Fire Services.

The valve didn’t pass a recent inspection, Peck said. The system dates back to 1974.

The board inquired about any warranty or life expectancy. Peck agreed to check with Eastern. The board voted 4-0 to proceed with replacement. Selectman Andrew Hufnagel was absent.

In other business, the board authorized the Police Department to apply for $4,166 from the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program to purchase five CopVu wearable video cameras.

Board approval allows the department to access the available funds, Town Manager Richard Davis said.

“They’re good protection for the officers and citizens,” he said of the cameras that could help in liability or false claim issues.

The board accepted a bid of $3,016 from Main Line Fence of Cumberland for used guardrails for the Voter Hill Road project.

The guardrails are galvanized steel and are in good shape, Davis said.

The board also approved bids for items for the Parks and Recreation Department. These included a new Kubota riding mower and repaving of the Hippach Field wading pool.

The new mower bid for $5,899 from Wallingford Equipment met specifications and came with a warranty, Davis said.

A bid from Bruce Manzer of North Anson for $8,475 includes a $600 tack coat to improve bonding between the wading pool surface and the new pavement.

The pool was last repaved in 2003,  Matt Foster, Farmington Recreation assistant director, said.  The new paving will be painted next year.
