FREEPORT —  Thirty teams of five recently competed in the second annual Maine Outdoor Challenge to raise more than $42,000 for Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine and the Rotary Club of Portland.

Experts and novices came together to test their sporting skills and, for some, this was the first time they had ever tried any of the four events that comprise the competition: archery, fly casting, 5 stand sporting clays and orienteering (geocaching).

The event spanned three days and culminated with a lobster bake and awards ceremony at Wolfe’s Neck Farm.

“We’re excited and proud to bring 30 teams together to experience the fun and challenges offered by some of our favorite outdoor sports in Maine,” said Kris Rosado, chairperson of the event. “It was a pure team effort by these two great organizations, and we are thrilled to have raised over $42,000 for their programs.”

“We grew from 19 teams last year to 30 teams this year. We had teams from all over Maine and two come from Tennessee and California to enjoy the event. We know we can grow this even larger next year,” said Robert Clark, the chief professional officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine.

The individual titles went to: Tyler Brannon for fly casting; Steve Card for sporting clays; Jason Darling, Marco Giancotti, Drew Wing and Dominic Prioli, tied for first in archery; Don Olen for overall top individual.
