LEWISTON —  There are more answers than there are questions, and there are a seemingly infinite number of questions,  playwright Linda Britt said in describing “Aiken Pond”  and “What If …?” opening this week at L/A Arts Downstage. Each play will run Thursday and Friday one week, and Saturday and Sunday the next, beginning Thursday, Aug. 1.

Produced by Out of the Box Theater Company, the two plays have little in common, Britt said, other than asking “what if” questions, and the fact that they involve four characters on a shared set.

“Both of these plays have me treading unfamiliar water as a writer. And directing them simultaneously may indicate instability on my part, but I prefer to call it faith,” said Britt.

In “Aiken Pond,” Professor Sarah Weston is the one asking herself the questions: What if she had responded differently when a student came to her seeking help? What if she hadn’t repressed her feelings about a long-past tragedy? And then… what if she has started seeing ghosts?

“Aiken Pond” features Cheryl Reynolds as Sarah Weston; Mark Hazard as her husband, Andy,  Maisy Cyr, as Amanda, the student who comes back to haunt Sarah, and  Mary Turcotte, as Sarah’s best friend, Barbara.

“What If…?” explores what happens when an after-dinner game gets out of hand for two apparently happily married couples, forcing one couple to deal with an indiscretion they thought long-buried and the other to deal with much fresher wounds.

“What If…?” features Jason Pelletier and Danielle Eaton as Cooper and Hollis Steele; and Ryan Adair and Vicki Machado as Reed and Kirby Quinn.

Scenic designer and tech director for the production is Britt’s partner, “in art and life,” Stan Spilecki.

The plays will run  Thursday, Aug. 1 through Sunday, Aug. 4, and Thursday Aug. 8, through Sunday Aug. 11.

There are more answers than questions, and a seemingly infinite number of questions to provoke and entertain the audience in two new productions by playwrite Linda Britt, opening this week at the Out of the Box Theater in the Downstage space at L/A Arts.
