CARRABASSETT VALLEY (AP) — About 30 searchers are heading back out to look for a Tennessee woman who disappeared from the Appalachian Trail in Maine.

Wardens say 66-year-old

of Brentwood, Tenn., was supposed to meet her husband a week ago in Maine but never showed up.

Monday’s search area encompasses about 80 square miles. Crews include Maine game wardens, Mahoosuc Search and Rescue, U.S. Border Patrol and the Maine Forest Service.

With a chance of thunderstorms, authorities say it is unlikely aircraft will be used.

Largay had started her hike in April at Harpers Ferry, W.Va., with a destination of Baxter State Park in Maine.

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Maine game wardens are searching for several hikers who may have information concerning missing Appalachian Trail hiker Geraldine Anita Largay.

Largay, 66, uses the trail name “inchworm,” and game wardens are searching for hikers who use the following trail names: “Cowboy,” “Marathon,” “Postman,” “Breeze,” “Paranoid,” “Crunchmaster,” “Harpo/Groucho,” “Ice Pack/SOBO ’13,” “Luke 11:9,” “Sandman,” “BBTGR” and “.com/Queen.”

“Warden investigators need to speak with the listed hikers to determine and verify if [Largay] was seen between the Poplar Ridge Lean-To and the Spaulding Mountain Lean-To on the Appalachian Trail,” Cpl. John MacDonald said in a statement on Saturday. “Warden investigators also need to verify if Geraldine stayed overnight at the Spaulding Mountain Lean-To [on Monday, July 22] into Tuesday morning, July 23.

“The Warden Service also wants to inform bear baiters baiting in the search area to be on the lookout for Mrs. Largay,” MacDonald said.

Approximately 130 people joined the search on Saturday as game wardens used ATVs, search dogs and aircraft. Maine Forest Ranger, Maine Association of Search and Rescue, U.S. Border Patrol and members of the Civil Air Patrol with a helicopter also assisted.

Maine Forest Service Ranger Jeff Currier said rangers are assisting with a helicopter, as they did on Friday.

MacDonald said there was nothing new to report on Sunday.

On Friday, 60 searchers assisted game wardens and searchers associated with the Maine Association of Search and Rescue in looking for Largay.

A command post was established at the Sugarloaf Mountain Resort.

Search efforts have been concentrated on the Appalachian Trail north of the Spaulding Lean-To in Mount Abram Township toward the Route 27 crossing in Wyman Township.

Largay, from Brentwood, Tenn., is 5-foot-5 and weighs 115 pounds. She has brown hair, brown eyes and was last seen wearing a black pullover shirt, tan pants, blue hat, and a black and green backpack.

Her last sighted location was on Route 4 in Sandy River Plantation on Sunday, July 2. She was planning to meet her husband, George, the following day in Wyman Township. She texted her husband at 7:15 a.m. Monday, but never arrived at their meeting place.

An employee at the Stratton Motel received a call from a female hiker on the evening of Wednesday, July 24, saying she was traveling south on the Appalachian Trail and spent the previous night with Largay at the Spaulding Lean-To on the Appalachian Trail.

Largay started her hike on the Appalachian Trail in April at Harpers Ferry, W.Va., with a destination of Baxter State Park.

MacDonald said Largay is an experienced hiker who was prepared with supplies and had no previous incidents up to this point in her hike.
