100 years ago, 1913
A building puzzle … removal of the old post office buildings has brought one to light. Since the old Maine store was torn down, passers-by on Lisbon Street have been furnished a new problem. It is: How long will the building beside it stand up, should there be a delay in constructing the new Cronin & Root structure? It is some puzzle. Not only has the building got a list to starboard, but it has a big bulge to port, with a decided cant ahead, and the term hasn’t yet been coined which will explain what it does aft. You couldn’t tell if the building is going to fall apart or collapse inwardly.

50 years ago, 1963
Lewiston’s proposed housing code was buttered up and battered about at an argument-spotted public hearing at city hall last night, and after a couple of hours of debate it was referred back to the drafting committee. A mild uproar sparked the start of the session, attended by more than 150 people, and police were called by a concerned Mayor Donia J. Girard. The opponents outnumbered those in favor of the housing code and many changes will be sought while it is in the hands of the drafters — the Urban Renewal Citizens Advisory Committee and city inspectors. Gavel pounding attempts to keep urban renewal out of the debate were only partially successful. Many complaints were tied directly to Lewiston’s downtown urban renewal plan.

25 years ago, 1988
A city government management report that calls for duties to be split between Auburn City Manager Paula Valente and Assistant City Manager Steve Lewis is scheduled for action Monday by the city council. The study said giving Lewis more duties now handled by Valente would provide the city manager with time for planning and handling outside issues, including the city’s energy-recovery plant.
