100 years ago, 1913
The bravery of Miss Alfreda B. Rogers, 17 years old, of Auburn, who is summering at Long Island in Casco Bay with an aunt, saved a Massachusetts man and his son from drowning, Monday evening. Miss Rogers was sitting on the porch of the cottage, which overlooks the water, about nine o’clock, when she heard cries of “help.” Without hesitation she rushed to the beach, launched the little punt and started in the direction from which the cries came. The boat was so small and she had never been allowed to venture far from shore as the current near the island is very strong. When she reached the scene she found the two men in the water, one helplessly supported by the other, who could swim only enough to keep his head above water. It seemed a miracle that she was able to help these men into the row boat, but the rescue was made.

50 years ago, 1963
It was more comfortable in the Lewiston-Auburn business district last night and a large number of shoppers turned out for Dollar Days bargains. Clinton Abrams, chairman of the Dollar Days Committee of the Mercantile Division, Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, termed the turnout excellent. Police described the turnout one of the largest in some time. The Dollar Days event was originally scheduled for last Friday and Saturday but was held over to Monday when hot and humid weather socked the city last weekend.

25 years ago, 1988
Le Festival Franco de Lewiston et Auburn, running Aug. 11 to 14 in Kennedy Park, will include talent, animal and cooking contests. The talent contest will be divided into two categories: French singing only and any other talent. Animal contest for young people ages 16 and under will feature a race, jumping and beauty competition for frogs, a cat show, a dog show and a contest for all other animals. Cooking contests will include pea soup, French crepes, tourtiere (meat pie) and cretons.
