BETHEL — Some 20 people who attended the East Bethel School, which closed in 1968, plus several other invited guests and interested persons were present at the annual “Reunion of the Scholars” held at Alder River Grange #145 in East Bethel on June 30.

One of the “stars” of this event was Edna Bean York, age 103 and a half, who was the first teacher in the “new” East Bethel School building constructed in 1928 by her father and wired for electricity by her uncle.

“Scholars” were treated to a power point presentation of school groups and activities through the years prepared by Alder River Grange Overseer James Haines. Alder River Grange Secretary Nancy Mercer was in charge of refreshments of punch, sandwiches, brownies and cookies, as this was one of Alder River Grange’s community service activities.

The Grange 2013 Community Service Award was presented by Lecturer Pro-Tem Stan Howe to Arlene Harrington of East Bethel for her many years of volunteer service to the East Bethel community, particularly in relation to the church and the cemetery.

Alder River Grange Overseer and Maine State Grange Deputy Master James Haines presented Alvin Stevens and Stan Howe with their 55 year member certificates.
