1922 – 2013

AUBURN — Barbara V. Goff, 91, a resident of Fern Street in Auburn, died peacefully Wednesday morning, July 31, at the Hospice House with her loving family by her side.

She was born in Lewiston on Feb. 11, 1922, the daughter of William and Clara (Perreault) Vaughan. She was a 1940 graduate of Lewiston High School, after which she became a telephone operator for New England Telephone & Telegraph Co.

She received her associate’s degree from the University of Southern Maine as a certified dental assistant, and was employed by Dr. Paul Smith and Dr. Fernand Chabot. In later years, she was employed with the ophthalmologist office of Doctors Tyler and Lonsdale in Lewiston.

She was a former member of St. Joseph’s Church — her family parish, she served as corporater of the Auburn Public Library, was a former board member of the CMMC Women’s Hospital Association, a member of the Women’s Literary Union in Auburn and treasurer of the retired telephone operators’ club that was formed during the mid-1940s.

Following retirement, she served as a volunteer in the children’s reading program of the Auburn school system.

Survivors include her son, Daniel T. Goff and his wife, Maureen, of New Gloucester; Jennifer G. Lynch and her husband, James, of Auburn; Ellen G. Scontras and her husband, Christopher, of Cape Elizabeth; five grandchildren, Katherine, Constantine and Kristina Scontras, as well as Thomas and Briana Lynch; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Philip, on Dec. 6, 1989; as well as three brothers and four sisters.
