NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen on Thursday unanimously awarded the contract for reconstruction of Crockett Ridge Road and Marion Avenue to Lane Corp. of Bangor.

The $171,746 bid was about $28,000 less than the next highest. Five companies submitted proposals ranging from $171,746 to $293,550.

Town Manager David Holt said the work could start this fall. It includes full depth pavement reclamation and installation of culverts on Crockett Ridge Road, and repaving and reshaping Marion Avenue.

Selectman Russ Newcomb said the range of bids was surprising because the largest variation appeared to have been in traffic controls, where bids ranged from a low of $3,350 from Lane Corp. to a high of $25,000 by C.H. Stevenson of Wayne, the high bidder.

Holt said there is also about $10,000 available to spot pave Beal Street, which was repaved about three years ago but is in need of some crack sealing.

According to its website, Lane Corp. is one of America’s premier heavy civil contractors. Founded by railroad engineer John S. Lane in 1890, the company constructs highways, bridges, locks, dams and mass transit and airport systems in 20 states.
