LEWISTON — A Lewiston couple remained in jail Tuesday night, charged with aggravated trafficking in crack cocaine after they were stopped by state police near the Gray exit of the Maine Turnpike.

Tanya Cahill, 27, and William Murchison, 29, were arrested Sunday night after Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agents alerted troopers the two were suspected of transporting drugs from Boston to the Lewiston area, according to a news release from the MDEA. Cahill was driving.

Troopers noted the odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle, which Murchison admitted was on him, according to the release.

A search of the vehicle yielded nine ounces of prepackaged crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $25,000, the release said.

Cahill and Murchinson were arrested and transported to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland. Bail was set at $10,000 cash each.

The arrests were the result of collaboration among the MDEA’s Western Regional Task Force Office, which serves Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, State Police and the Lewiston Police Department.
