LEWISTON — The Lewiston Public Library, Healthy Androscoggin and the Maine Folque Co-op have teamed up to extend a hearty invitation to community members of all ages to attend a lively evening of music and dancing on Friday, Aug. 9, in LPL’s Callahan Hall, 200 Lisbon St.

The action will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with a French-Canadian-style barn dance featuring fun and easy contras, squares and circle dances taught by Franco dance leader Cindy Larock from Lewiston, who was mentored by Montreal dance master Benoit Bourque. This is a “come-one/come-all” event geared for all who may not have any dance experience.

The music will be provided by a multi-generational orchestra of folk musicians performing on fiddles, guitars, accordion, mandolin, piano and percussion. While based in Lewiston-Auburn, the members of the group, who range in age from middle-schoolers to Baby Boomers, come from all over central Maine, drawn by their common love for the old-time dance tunes, with a particular affection for the jigs and reels of French Canada.

Admission to the barn dance is $2 for adults, with a reduced rate of $1 for youths, including college students up to age 22. The youths who volunteered on last Friday’s community clean-up project are invited to attend at two-for-the-price-of-one, just $1 for two youth volunteers.

Following the family dance at 8 p.m., there will be three hours of “full-throttle” contra dancing to music by the special guest band Raz de Marée (Tidal Wave) from Quebec, featuring fiddler Eric Favreau, accordionist Sabin Jacques, pianist/singer Rachel Aucoin and string bass player Stuart Kenny. Caller Chrissy Fowler of Belfast will preside. Though designed for a more experienced dance crowd than the preceding barn dance, Fowler encourages adventurous beginners to attend as well, either with or without a partner, as dance instruction will continue throughout the evening. Admission is $5, $2 for students up to age 22.

Healthy Androscoggin will provide free healthy snacks as well as educational materials.

For those who can’t attend the Raz de Marée dance at LPL on Friday, the quartet will perform in concert at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Winthrop Performing Arts Center, 211 Rambler Road in Winthrop. Admission is $8, $5 for students up to age 22.
