The budget process in Rumford is not about the Save Rumford Committee, and elected town officials need to always remember that they work for the people of the community.

When the people voted on the budget proposals, the majority wanted lower taxes. The town’s biggest taxpayer also asked town officials to reduce the budget so everyone’s taxes would be lower.

In return, it seems town officials have done what they think is best for the town, regardless if the majority want lower taxes.

Now the Save Rumford Committee and town officials are competing to see who is right or wrong.

Citizens who are going to vote for the third time need to do what is best for their personal financial situations and not listen to the war that is going on in this town.

Voters must ask themselves if they can afford higher taxes. Economic times have changed. People may not be able to fund or give what they used to do and should not be shameful of that.

I worked for more than 14 years as a firefighter. When budget cuts were made, it was hard to swallow. But it was what the taxpayers wanted.

I have also served on a number of boards and was a Rumford selectman. I know cuts can be made and what great things can happen in Rumford.
