AUGUSTA — Mainers concerned about “smart meters” are getting a chance to voice their opinions this week.
Maine’s Public Utilities Commission is holding a public hearing Wednesday at Jewett Hall on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta. There will be two sessions, one from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. and another from 5 p.m. until at least 7 p.m.
Proponents say smart meters can alert utilities of outages and cut costs. Opponents have raised concerns about long-term health effects of being exposed to the radio frequency radiation emitted by the meters.
Last year the state supreme court sided with smarter meter opponents, who argued that regulators ignored their legal mandate to ensure the delivery of “safe, reasonable and adequate” utility service. The commission launched an investigation into the meters.
