SOUTH PORTLAND — A South Portland-based credit card payment processing company has suspended plans to expand and possibly relocate its corporate headquarters.

WEX Inc. had been considering expansion opportunities in Maine that would have more than doubled the size of its current headquarters.

Company spokeswoman Trish O’Donnell did not provide any reasons for Tuesday’s decision, but said the company is committed to the Portland area.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/174J25f ) reports the announcement comes just days after the company met with South Portland planners and the state Department of Environmental Protection and indicated it would soon file plans to expand its campus, where more than 600 people work.

The company reported quarterly earnings last week. WEX posted adjusted earnings of $41.1 million on revenues of $178.3 million, topping Wall Street expectations.
