PORTSMOUTH, N.H.— New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan says the new bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery represents the historical connections between the two states and their shared economic future.
Hassan was joined by U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine at a ceremony Thursday to open the Memorial Bridge. Hundreds of onlookers attended.
The $81.4 million bridge replaces one that was built in 1923 and closed two years ago.
As she did 90 years ago, former Portsmouth mayor Eileen Foley did the ribbon-cutting honors. This time, she rode across the bridge in a golf cart, with a bouquet of flowers on her lap.
The crowd cheered as she cut the ribbon, then sang “God Bless America.”
