100 years ago, 1913
Inexperience, the chop kicked up by the strong south wind, and a canoe imperiled the life of an unknown young man on the north shore of Lake Auburn. Friday, at dusk, his rescue came just in time. The rescue was made my Mr. Patterson, who put out in a rowboat upon hearing the cries for help. The man was nearly exhausted, hanging to the top of the canoe. The wind that has the sweep of the lake made the water unusually rough at this section. This instance will work toward registration of persons hiring canoes in the future to facilitate the work of the authorities in clearing up such occurrences. The canoe was hired shortly before sunset. The navigator, a large framed man, was a novice, for he took his seat in the bow to paddle.

50 years ago, 1963
Almost 90 percent of a number of Auburn residents interviewed at random yesterday by members of the League of Women Voters of Auburn indicated they did not know what offices would be filled in the city’s election next month, and more than 75 percent did not know when the election is to be held. Of the 240 persons who answered the questions, there were 138 women and 102 men. A surprising, but small, number of persons thought they had to pay for the privilege of registering to vote.

25 years ago, 1988
Central Maine Medical Center will hold a public groundbreaking ceremony for its modernization/expansion project on Monday in the Lowell Street parking lot directly behind the medical center. The ceremony will mark the culmination of seven years of planning for the $19.3-million building project. Highlights of the project include a four-story. 89,000-square-foot addition; a dedicated Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, a new Emergency Department, Surgical Services Department and Recovery Room, and more.
