1945 – 2013
AUBURN — Lawrence “Larry” Alan Lewis, 67, of New Gloucester, passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 8, at the Hospice House in Auburn, following his courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Middletown, Conn., on Sept. 9, 1945, son of the late Carleton and Ruth (Westman) Lewis. He grew up in the Middletown area and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. From 1966 to 1969, Larry proudly served his country in the Air Force. On Aug. 4, 1973, he married the love of his life, Wilda Rose Plog, in Madrid. On Aug. 4, he and his “little sweetheart” celebrated 40 years of marriage with their four children and six grandchildren.
Larry, the hardest worker you’ve ever met, ran his own appliance repair business, LDR Appliance, before becoming a merchandising support staff member at Macy’s department store, where he worked for 26 years.
He will always be remembered for his love of birds, nature, animals, crossword puzzles, FreeCell, tinkering, writing lists, collecting, sports, coaching his kids in both basketball and baseball, and his love for talking sports, politics and corporate America.
He will also be remembered as being very analytical, forgiving, courageous, smart, caring, energetic, hard-working, diligent and compassionate, and for being a loving husband, father and grandfather. His curiosity and yearning-for-learning were always respected traits of his, along with his encouragement of curiosity and education.
Larry always put his family first and always provided for his family. His wife, kids and grandchildren were his world.
Larry is survived by his wife, Wilda Rose Lewis, of New Gloucester; his eldest daughter, Danielle Lewis and her sons, Austin and Brett; middle daughter, Miranda Sepulveda and her husband, Wil, along with their children, Dominique and Olivia; his No. 1 son, Derek Lewis and his children, Brody and Makenzie; youngest daughter, Catherine Lewis; brother-in-law, John Belniak; and nieces, Anne Galanto, Brenda Michanczyk and Jean Belniak, as well as many other nieces and nephews.
