1938 – 2013

WATERVILLE — The Rev. George W. Hickey, 75, of Hallowell, died Friday, Aug. 9, at Maine General Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville, after a period of ill health.

He was born in Augusta on March 23, 1938, the son of George W. Hickey and Catherine G. (Faulkner) Hickey. He was a 1957 graduate of Cony High School in Augusta.

In 1964, Fr. Hickey entered St. Philip Neri School of Delayed Vocations in Boston, Mass. In 1965, he enrolled at St. Francis College in Biddeford, graduating in 1969. He then entered St. Paul University and Seminary in Ottawa, Canada, where he was ordained as a deacon in 1971. Fr. Hickey was ordained as a priest on June 28, 1973, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta.

In 1999, Fr. Hickey celebrated his 25th anniversary as a priest, followed by a sabbatical year of study, retreat and rest at the Vatican II institute, St. Patrick’s College in Menlo Park, Calif.

Upon his return to Maine, Fr. Hickey was made pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallowell, where he was currently the pastor. This past June, he celebrated his 40th anniversary as an ordained priest.

Fr. Hickey is survived by three nephews, two nieces, several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Michael F. Hickey; sister, Roberta (Hickey) Burton; and by a beloved sister-in-law, Joanne (Keene) Hickey.
