Enjoying life for a few days, near the shore of Lake Auburn, is one of the world’s most famous aviators, Edward R. Shaw of Boston, who will fly from Portland, the first of October, for a trip around the world. Why is he in this area? Because Miss Marie Dunn is appearing with the “Aeronauts” at Lake Grove Theatre, and Miss Dunne happens to be his fiancee. They will be married in September and she will make the trip around the world with her aviator bridegroom though she will travel most of the way by rail and water, making an occasional and short flight in the air. “Aeroplanes and automobiles are not made for women to manage, according to my opinion,” said Mr. Shaw. “Miss Dunne has never made a flight with me and I don’t intend she shall until I have a machine in which I have absolute confidence.”

A leatherback giant sea turtle, only the fourth captured in Maine waters since 1900, was brought to Lewiston last night by a group of six Lewiston sportsmen who captured the giant 1,000 pound creature 15 miles off Boothbay Harbor. The turtle, which measured seven feet in length and had flippers 44 inches long, was finally killed by two rifle shots from another boat. Harpoons had no effect in making the kill. A marine biologist, who viewed the turtle after it had been winched onto the Boothbay Harbor pier, estimated it was from 150 to 200 years old. The creature will be on display at the Lewiston Machine Shop on the River Road, Lewiston.

A huge pall of dense, choking smoke shrouded the downtown Lewiston area Thursday afternoon as flames heavily damaged a newly-renovated apartment building at the corner of Cedar and Canal streets, leaving 31 residents homeless. The thick, acrid smoke combined with almost no breeze, 90-degree temperatures, and high humidity to hamper firefighters’ efforts to combat the blaze in a four-story structure. The smoke also drove hundreds of people attending Le Festival de Lewiston et Auburn from Kennedy Park as it blanketed the area.
