SCARBOROUGH — A man from the Steep Falls section of Standish died late Saturday night in the pit area of Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in what police are characterizing as a tragic accident, Scarborough Police Sgt. Rick Rouse said Monday.

Gregory Rowe, 47, was riding out of the pit area on the back of a pickup truck at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday when he fell to the ground and was run over by the trailer in tow, Rouse said.

The incident occurred nearly two hours after the night’s race had concluded, said Rouse, who was one of two police officers patrolling the pit Saturday evening.

Beech Ridge officials posted a statement online late Monday morning about the accident.

“We at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt condolences to one of our race teams and its families following an unfortunate loss late Saturday night,” the statement read, in part. “We know the entire Beech Ridge community shares in your grieving process and will continue to hold you in its thoughts and prayers.”

Rouse said police do not plan to press charges against anyone involved in the incident, saying officers are considering the death an accident.

Beech Ridge Motor Speedway is a 1/3-mile NASCAR-sanctioned asphalt oval track not far from the Scarborough Downs horse racing track.
