BETHEL — The SAD 44 board authorized Superintendent David Murphy to begin the process for transferring the former Ethel Bisbee Elementary School to the town when they met on Monday.
The classic, turn of the 19th century wooden building was closed in the early 1990s when the Crescent Park Elementary School opened, Murphy said. It was named after a longtime principal at the school.
For the past two years, the district has used the building for cold storage. Very little heat was used and no electricity, Murphy said. Prior to that, it served as the district’s Central Office, and as the adult education center.
The building sits on about two acres.
The town has expressed an interest in acquiring the centrally located parcel and building. Whether the building will be retained is not known as this time, Murphy said.
In other matters, the board set a second meeting for August 26 to deal with several open positions and to finalize the Telstar Education Association’s contract.
The board also unanimously voted to readmit a Telstar High School student who had been expelled in February for taking part in damage caused at the school by setting off the sprinkler system.
Murphy said the board met in closed session for nearly an hour to consult with legal counsel and to discuss the matter. He said the boy has met all requirements needed to return to classes.
The board learned of the resignation of physical education/health teacher Josh Onorato. Several new staff were also appointed. They are: Jennifer Boles as a K-5 art teacher; Joseph Bailey as a Telstar Middle School guidance counselor, Autumn Gregory as a TMS English teacher, Richard Curley as a grade 2/3 teacher and teaching principal at Andover Elementary School and Heath Booth as a half-time math teacher at THS.
Levi Brown was re-appointed as teaching principal at Crescent Park Elementary School and Jolene Littlehale was re-appointed as teaching principal at Woodstock Elementary School.
