WILTON — Wilton Police Department will conduct extra patrol shifts from Aug.16 through Sept. 2 during this year’s nationwide drunk driving crackdown, police Chief Heidi Wilcox said.
The department has scheduled a roadblock for this weekend as a safety checkpoint for driving under the influence, Wilcox said.
The department received a grant in December from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety. Police used some of the money to cover costs of extra patrols and checkpoints last year. The remaining grant money will cover the extra patrols and checkpoint and roadblock scheduled in the next two weeks, Wilcox said.
The Wilton department is joining the 2013 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown, a commitment to public safety in the community to save lives on local roads.
Thousands of law enforcement officers, state and local police departments and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are participating in the drunken driving crackdown from August 16 to September 2.
Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce drunken driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent, according to the administration’s website.
