PORTLAND — A school for circus performers is the “one-of-a-kind performing arts tenant” that will call the future development on Thompson’s Point home.

The Circus Conservatory of America will be announced as a tenant of the long-awaited $105 million development on Portland’s Thompson’s Point at a press conference Thursday afternoon, confirmed Nicole Clegg, a spokeswoman for the city of Portland.

“It will be the first circus school in America where you’ll be able to earn a bachelor’s degree in that art form,” Clegg said.

The school for circus performers is a new nonprofit organization, which registered its corporate name with the state on July 25, according to the Maine Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions.

The development — dubbed The Forefront at Thompson’s Point — has been proposed for the 28-acre property near the Portland Transportation Center. Developers have planned a 3,500-seat event center that eventually will serve as the new home for the Maine Red Claws professional basketball team, a parking garage, hotel, restaurant and office buildings.

Forefront Partners, the developers behind the project, officially acquired the property on July 1.

Earlier this month, a real estate broker involved with the sale of the site said a tenant has also been lined up for one of the office buildings — a 175,00-square-foot structure — in the project, but he declined to identify the tenant by name.
