Evergreen will play Aug. 23 in Greene.
The next Sawyer Memorial program will hold two shows, one at 2 p.m. and one at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23, featuring the Evergreen Band quartet, at the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial building, 371 Sawyer Road, Greene. The band took its original name “The Greens” from an old country song — the political party of the same name was unknown at the time — and began performing at coffeehouses around the area. As the band evolved and members changed, the band searched for a new name. It needed to be different, and yet still retain some link to the group’s past. Many suggestions were floated, and “Evergreen” rose to the top.
