1921 – 2013

LEWISTON — Doris M. Dorion, 92, of Auburn, died Saturday, Aug.17, at the Androscoggin Home Health & Hospice’s Hospice House in Lewiston.

Born in Rumford on April 15, 1921, the daughter of Henry Gagnon and Leonie (Pare) Gagnon, she grew up in Rumford and graduated from Stephens High School.

She was married for 58 years to Alphonse Dorion, who predeceased her in November 2000.

Doris spent most of her life in Rumford and always enjoyed staying close to home. A talented homemaker, she created outstanding needlework of every kind and was noted for her delicious cooking, especially jams of all kinds and her Franco-American specialty, raisin pie. She compiled a recipe collection that filled volumes and was always on the lookout for that next, best recipe.

Doris volunteered for years with the local American Red Cross disaster relief program and was active with the University of Maine Extension Service teaching sewing and knitting to local residents. She also assisted her husband, Alphonse, in his operation of Dorion Printing Service for many years.

After the death of her husband and a period of declining health, Doris lived at Sunbury Village in Bangor for several years. She then moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn, where she lived until her death.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Peggy Baum and her husband, Edward, of Hermon, Mark Dorion and his wife, Suzanne, of New Gloucester, Francis Dorion and his wife, Patricia, of Plainville, Conn., and Christine Fleury and her husband, Paul, of Gorham; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
