CHESTERVILLE — A convicted murderer on parole for life was arrested Wednesday for illegally being in Maine at a residence on Horseshoe Pond Road.

Barry Brown, 50, of Raymond, N.H., moved to Maine without proper authorization between the New Hampshire parole division and Maine Probation and Parole, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said.

Brown was arrested without incident on a misdemeanor charge of violation of Interstate Compact for Adult Supervision, Nichols said.

County Detectives Lt. David St. Laurent and Stephen Charles worked with Maine Probation and Parole officer Troy Sterry to make the arrest. Sterry received information that Brown was illegally in Maine and where he was staying.

Brown had applied to the New Hampshire parole department to move to Maine, Nichols said. Transferring parole between the two states had not been done when Brown moved to Maine, Nichols said.

He is being held without bail until he goes before a judge.

Brown received a sentence of 20 to 99 years on a conviction of second degree murder on Nov. 19, 1984, according to the New Hampshire Department of Records Office. 

He has been been back three times for parole violations since he was released, an office representative said. She could not give the number of years he served, but he served the minimum 20, the representative said.

Brown is on parole for life.

Nichols said Brown had served 24 to 26 years.
