BETHEL – Construction on a series of roadside directional signs is expected to begin in about three weeks, Town Manager Jim Doar said.

The Board of Selectmen unanimously voted Wednesday night to award the sign bid to Ryan Mechanical Services of Rumford and Swan Screen Printing of Bethel. Ryan Mechanical Services will do the metal work, while Swan builds the signs, Doar said.

The sign panels for highway placement will measure 84 by 20 inches, while the sign panels for village placement will measure 48 inches by 12 inches.

“The dimensions for the signs are the same size that the Department of Transportation uses for their own signs,” Doar said. “I don’t know that the state does signs for placement in the village, but the dimensions that we’re using meet a specific federal highway standard.”

Swan Screen Printing said in its bid that the sign panels would be “made of Lusterboard, an aluminum coated plywood made exclusively for the sign industry.” The Lusterboard will be sheeted with high performance vinyl, since “it holds up better than paint.”

Among the signs Swan Screen Printing may be constructing are one with the Town of Bethel header and the town logo, a sign panel with a two-line entry and a sign panel with a one-line entry.

According to the invitation to bid, the town expects the “sign posts and headers, intra-community sign panels, and roadside directional sign panels to be in place eight weeks after the bid is awarded.”

Ryan Mechanical Services and Swan Screen Printing said they would require three weeks of lead time before beginning work on the project.
