BANGOR — Police arrested an Old Town man Wednesday night in a bar after another man’s shorts were stolen from the nearby Bangor Mall, according to a police report.

Dennis Duval, 48, was arrested Wednesday night and charged with Class C theft, as well as misdemeanor receiving stolen property and misuse of identification, Bangor police Lt. Paul Edwards said Thursday in a news release.

Bangor police Officer Dick Polk went to Macy’s after management called around 9 p.m. to report that a man’s shorts, containing his wallet and other personal items, had been stolen from a changing room. The victim had been trying on suits for a wedding and returned to the changing stall to find his shorts had been stolen.

Macy’s management gave the victim a pair of shorts to wear out of the store.

A Macy’s employee told Polk that one of her customers had been acting strangely while making transactions at her register. She said the man appeared to be about 50 years old with gray hair and “a thick Boston accent.” The employee also said that the man showed off staples in his shoulder that he said were the result of an injury.

Polk offered to give the victim a ride home to Orono, but first decided to check restaurants and bars in the area that were open. The second bar he checked was at Chili’s on Stillwater Avenue.

When the officer walked in, the bartender apparently pointed out Duval, who was sitting at the bar, to Polk, Edwards said.

Polk questioned Duval, who showed the officer a stolen card and claimed he was actually the man who was the theft victim. Polk arrested Duval and all the victim’s property, shorts included, was returned.
