PORTLAND — Color Payson Park “pink” on Sunday, Sept. 8, for the fourth annual Susan G. Komen Maine Race for the Cure.
One of the largest 5K run/walks in the state, the 2012 race drew more than 1,000 participants and raised more than $100,000. Importantly, 75 percent of net funds remain in Maine to fund education, screening and treatment programs. Twenty-five percent of net funds go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program, funding cutting edge breast cancer research.
Sally Bilancia, executive director of the Komen Maine Affiliate, said, “We’ve been running our Bangor Race for the Cure since 1997, and are excited to be able provide a newer race venue in Portland so that the Southern Maine supporters of breast cancer education, research and diagnosis have the opportunity run locally.”
Online registration is open at www.komenmaine.org. The system allows participants to customize their own fundraising webpages where they can upload photos, tell their stories and illustration fundraising goals. They can email friends and family directly from the site for a fun and easy way to help the cause. Participants can also fund-raise through Facebook.
Participants who raise $250 or more will receive their choice of name brand merchandise as a thank you for collecting pledges.
A Race Store will be set up at the Falmouth Shopping Center for participants to register in person or pick up their T-shirt in advance. Store hours will be Saturday, Aug. 31, and Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Supporters who can’t be there on race day may sign up as a Sleep In for the Cure participant and receive the same T-shirt as other participants, plus a Sleep-In pillow case.
