1932 – 2013
AUBURN — Donald James Sands, 81, of Lewiston and Poland, died on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Clover Manor Health Care Facility following a long period of declining health.
Donald was born in Lewiston on April 9, 1932, the son of James Mac Nichol and Dorothy (Hodgkins) Sands. He was educated in Lewiston Schools and graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of 1950.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in Okinawa and worked for many years as a textile dye mixer for Miller Industries in Lisbon.
He was a member of Court Street Baptist Church in Auburn, the Mayflower Society of Maine and the American Legion. Donald had a great interest in the Civil War, painting, music and old movies.
He is survived by his daughter, Catherine S. Delaney; three grandchildren, Scott Dillingham II and his wife, Darlene Armstrong, Kristen Dillingham and Chad Dow, and one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Dillingham, all of Ontario, Canada; a brother, Edward C. Sands of Poland; a sister, Constance S. Mazzone of Auburn; and two nieces and two nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and two sisters, Dorothy S. Denis and Ruth S. Wardwell.
