Beginning Sunday, the Lewiston, Auburn & Waterville street railway will run cars from the head of Lisbon and Main streets to the Maine State fair grounds every five minutes. The service will be better than ever before. In order to do this, however, it will be necessary to take one of the Auburn Heights cars for that week only and the Auburn Heights cars will leave the waiting room every 20 minutes. Auburn Heights patrons will thus have three cars each hour, which is one car more than they had up to a few weeks ago. This service will resume at the close of the fair. Prospect Hill, New Auburn, and all other lines will have the same service as usual. Lisbon Street will have another car going as far as Cedar street, for it is proposed to have the Auburn Heights cars make that distance on each trip before returning to Auburn.

Some 5,000 spectators turned out at Marcotte Park yesterday for the “Fun Day” program sponsored by the Lewiston Junior Chamber of Commerce, Richard E. Dube, Jaycee president, reported last night. The day’s activities started with a small parade from Lewiston City Park about 1:30 p.m. Included were the Pine Tree Warriors, Engine One of the Central Fire Station, and a U.S. Marine Corps vehicle displaying banners inviting youngsters to the day-long carnival. Approximately 1,000 anxious youngsters and their parents welcomed the parade entourage which was delayed, waiting the arrival of animals scheduled to appear on the program. The elephants never did parade. Children were entertained by a variety of “kiddie rides” which featured an elephant-drawn buggy ride and pony rides, and a dog act on a high ladder.

A fire in a basement elevator room at the Auburn City Building on Friday forced the evacuation of employees in below-ground offices, where about 12 employees work. The damage apparently was limited, a fire official said. Capt. Michael Brooks said the fire was contained to an elevator equipment room. The fire was reported by the alarm at the city building.
