PARIS — Two men accused of trafficking crack cocaine in the Rumford area pleaded not guilty during their arraignment in Oxford County Superior Court on Tuesday.

Martin D. Lore, 27, and Edward E. Towers, 48, both of Rumford were indicted last month on charges stemming from the seizure of more than 13 grams of crack cocaine by Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and Rumford Police Department in April.

According to an affidavit by MDEA Agent Tony Milligan, officers were acting on a tip that Towers and another person indicted in connection to the case, Jolene K. Norris, 38, were regularly traveling to Portland to pick up illegal drugs to distribute in the Rumford area.

Towers pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs. 

Justice Robert Clifford also granted an adjustment to Towers’ bail conditions that allows only personnel from Maine Pre-Trial Services to conduct random searches on his person. 

Towers’ attorney, Walter Hanstein, asked for the change in bail conditions, telling Justice Clifford that his client had been subjected to a “very abusive search” by the Rumford Police Department. 

Police, as well as Maine Pre-Trial Services, are still permitted to conduct random searches of Towers’ property, according to his bail conditions. 

Lore, appearing in an orange Oxford County Jail jumpsuit, pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs. He was arrested on one charge of violating bail conditions last Friday by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office. 

On Tuesday afternoon, Lore was released from jail on personal recognizance, according to an Oxford County Jail representative.
